Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Anxiety can be experienced at different levels, and although most people experience a relatively mild form of anxiety when facing particularly stressful situations, anxiety disorders are severe and can disrupt the day-to-day life of an individual. Anxiety can be brought on by a fear of something that happened, or what we think happened and dread happening again.
When clients suffer from an anxiety disorder it may lead to avoidance of certain situations because they fear their anxiety may be triggered. This can in turn lead to relationship and/or career problems such as not being able to achieve potential job opportunities or promotions and being unable to develop personal relationships.
Understanding how anxiety affects you
Anxiety doesn’t just live in your mind. You might notice your heart racing when you think about that presentation at work, or feel your stomach tighten when you’re faced with a social situation. Perhaps you find yourself lying awake at night, thoughts spinning, unable to switch off. These physical symptoms are your body’s way of responding to perceived threats, even when there’s no actual danger present.
Many of my clients describe feeling as though they’re constantly on edge, waiting for something bad to happen. You might recognise this feeling of being trapped in a cycle of worry, where one anxious thought leads to another, and before you know it, you’re imagining worst-case scenarios that feel incredibly real and overwhelming.
The different faces of anxiety
Anxiety shows up differently for different people. Some experience generalised anxiety, where worries about everyday matters feel impossible to control. Others might have social anxiety, dreading interactions with people or feeling scrutinised in social settings. You might find your anxiety centres around specific situations, like travelling, health concerns, or being in crowded spaces.
Panic attacks are characterised by terror which suddenly strikes without warning and can be extremely frightening. During a panic attack, you might experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or feel as though you’re losing control or even dying. These attacks can happen anywhere, at any time, and the fear of having another one can become a source of anxiety in itself.
Why traditional approaches sometimes fall short
You’ve probably tried various ways to manage your anxiety. Perhaps you’ve been told to “just relax” or “stop worrying so much” – advice that, whilst well-meaning, rarely helps and can actually make you feel worse. You might have tried breathing exercises, meditation apps, or keeping busy to distract yourself, only to find the anxiety returns the moment you stop.
The thing is, anxiety often has roots that go deeper than our conscious mind can easily access. It might stem from an experience you’ve long forgotten, or from patterns of thinking that were established years ago. Your unconscious mind is trying to protect you, but sometimes it gets a bit overzealous and triggers anxiety responses when they’re not actually needed.
How Cognitive Hypnotherapy helps with anxiety
Cognitive Hypnotherapy can be a very effective treatment for anxiety disorders. I use it to seek out the root cause of the anxiety and change the client’s perception of a past event or release emotion from it.
What I find particularly effective about this approach is that we’re not just managing symptoms or trying to override your anxious thoughts with positive thinking. Instead, we work with your unconscious mind to understand why the anxiety is there in the first place, and then we update those outdated patterns.
During our sessions, we might explore when you first started feeling anxious, what triggers your anxiety now, and what your mind thinks it’s protecting you from. Often, clients are surprised to discover that their anxiety is linked to something they hadn’t consciously connected, or that it developed as a coping mechanism that once served them but no longer does.
The beauty of Cognitive Hypnotherapy is that it’s flexible and completely tailored to you. We work at your pace, and I use techniques that feel comfortable and right for your particular situation. You remain in control throughout, and many clients describe the experience as deeply relaxing – often the most relaxed they’ve felt in a long time.
What you might experience
Many of my clients notice changes quite quickly. You might find that situations which previously triggered intense anxiety start to feel more manageable. That constant background hum of worry might begin to quieten. You may sleep better, feel more present in your daily life, and notice you’re able to do things you’ve been avoiding.
Some clients describe it as finally feeling like themselves again, or perhaps even discovering a calmer version of themselves they didn’t know existed. The physical symptoms often ease as well – that tight chest, those churning thoughts, the exhaustion from being constantly on alert.
Taking the first step
I understand that reaching out for help with anxiety can feel daunting in itself. You might be worried about talking to someone new, or concerned that nothing will work. Please know that there’s no pressure in our initial conversation. We can have a chat about what you’re experiencing, how I might be able to help, and whether Cognitive Hypnotherapy feels like the right approach for you.
Anxiety doesn’t have to be something you just live with. You deserve to feel calm, confident, and in control of your life again.
