Online hypnotherapy
Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as face-to-face sessions, and for many people, it’s actually more convenient and comfortable. I’ve been providing cognitive hypnotherapy since 2013, entirely online since 2020, working with clients across the UK and beyond from the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

Your questions about online therapy
If you’re considering online hypnotherapy, you probably have some questions. Perhaps you’re wondering whether it can really work as well as meeting in person, or you’re concerned about the technology side of things. Maybe you’re curious about what a session actually looks like, or whether you’ll be able to relax properly in your own home.
These are all perfectly reasonable questions, and I’m going to address them here so you can feel confident about whether online hypnotherapy is right for you.
Does online hypnotherapy actually work?
This is usually the first question people ask, and I completely understand why. The short answer is yes, absolutely. Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions, and research supports this.
Hypnotherapy doesn’t require me to be in the same room as you. What matters is the communication between us, the rapport we build, and your willingness to engage with the process. All of these things work perfectly well over Zoom. In fact, many clients find they’re able to relax more deeply at home, in a familiar environment where they feel safe and comfortable.
I’ve been working entirely online for nearly six years now, and I’ve seen consistently excellent results. Clients overcome phobias, reduce anxiety, build confidence, break unwanted habits, and make all kinds of positive changes through our online sessions. The screen between us doesn’t diminish the effectiveness of the therapy in any way.
The unexpected advantages of online sessions
When I first moved my practice online, I expected it to be a practical compromise. What I discovered instead is that online therapy offers some genuine advantages that face-to-face sessions don’t.
You’re in your own space – There’s something powerful about working through your issues in the environment where you actually live your life. You’re not travelling to an unfamiliar therapy room; you’re in your own home, sitting in your favourite chair, perhaps with a blanket and a cup of tea. This familiarity can actually help you relax more deeply.
No travel time or stress – You don’t need to factor in journey time, worry about
traffic, or rush to get to an appointment. You simply log on at the agreed time. This makes therapy much more accessible, especially if you have a busy schedule, mobility issues, or live in a remote area.
Flexibility and convenience – Online sessions can fit around your life more easily. If you’re working from home, you can have a session during your lunch break. Evening and weekend appointments are easier to accommodate.
Privacy and discretion – Some people feel more comfortable knowing they won’t bump into anyone in a waiting room. You can have your session and go straight back to your day without anyone knowing you’ve had therapy. For those who value privacy, this is a significant benefit.
Geographical freedom – You’re not limited to therapists in your local area. You can work with someone whose approach and expertise is exactly right for you, regardless of where they’re based. I work with clients across the UK and internationally.
Immediate comfort after sessions – After a particularly emotional or intensive session, you’re already home. You can take all the time you need to process things, have a lie down if you want to, or simply potter around your own space. There’s no need to pull yourself together and drive home or deal with public transport.
What you’ll need for online sessions
The technology side is simpler than you might think. You’ll need:
A device with a camera and microphone – this could be a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Most modern devices have these built in.
A reasonable internet connection – you don’t need super-fast broadband, just a stable connection that can handle video calls. If you can video call friends or family, you can do online hypnotherapy.
A quiet, private space – somewhere you won’t be interrupted for the duration of the session. This could be your bedroom, your home office, or even your car if that’s the most private space available to you.
Headphones or earbuds – these aren’t essential, but many clients find they help create a more immersive experience and ensure privacy if others are in the house.
We use Zoom for sessions, which is straightforward to use. I’ll send you a link, you click it, and we’re connected. If you’ve never used it before, don’t worry – I can talk you through it, and we can do a quick tech check before your first session to make sure everything’s working properly.
What an online session looks like
At the start of our session, we’ll have a conversation just as we would if we were in the same room. I’ll ask about what’s been happening, how you’re feeling, and what you’d like to work on. This conversational part is important for building rapport and understanding what’s going on for you.
When we move into the hypnotherapy itself, you’ll typically be sitting or lying comfortably. Some clients like to recline in a comfortable chair, others prefer to lie on their bed or sofa. You’re in control of your environment, so you can set things up however feels best for you.
I’ll guide you into a relaxed state using my voice, just as I would in person. You’ll remain aware of what’s happening – hypnosis isn’t sleep, and you’re not unconscious. You can hear me throughout, and you could open your eyes and speak at any point if you needed to. Most people describe the experience as deeply relaxing, similar to that drowsy feeling just before you fall asleep, or the absorbed state you get into when reading a really good book.
We work together to address whatever you’ve come to therapy for, using techniques tailored to your specific situation. At the end of the session, I’ll bring you back to full alertness, and we’ll have a chat about the experience and what to expect going forward.
Creating the right environment
One of the keys to successful online hypnotherapy is creating a comfortable environment for your sessions. Here are some tips:
Let others know you need privacy – if you live with other people, let them know you’ll be in a session and ask them not to disturb you. Put a note on the door if that helps.
Make yourself physically comfortable – have cushions, blankets, water to hand. You might want to dim the lights or close the curtains. Some clients like to have a candle or essential oils. Create an environment that helps you feel relaxed.
Minimise distractions – put your phone on silent, close other browser tabs, and let pets out or contain them in another room if possible. The fewer interruptions, the more you’ll be able to focus on the session.
Position your camera well – you want to be visible on screen but also comfortable. Most people position their device so I can see their face and upper body. We can adjust this during the session if needed.
Test your setup – before your first session, sit in the position you’ll be in and check that you’re comfortable for 60-90 minutes. Make any adjustments needed.
Common concerns addressed
“What if my internet cuts out?” – If this happens, we simply reconnect and carry on. It’s a minor interruption, nothing more. We can always extend the session slightly if needed to make up for lost time.
“What if someone interrupts?” – If someone knocks on the door or walks in unexpectedly, we pause and deal with it, then continue. It’s not ideal, but it’s not a disaster either. We work around real life.
“I’m not very good with technology.” – You don’t need to be. If you can video call, you can do this. I’ll support you through any technical aspects, and we can troubleshoot together if needed.
“Will I be able to relax properly at home?” – Most people find they relax more easily at home than they would in an unfamiliar therapy room. Your home is your safe space, and that actually supports the therapeutic process.
“What if I need tissues or feel emotional?” – Being at home means you have everything you need to hand. If you become emotional during a session (which is perfectly normal and sometimes part of the healing process), you can take all the time you need. There’s no pressure to compose yourself before leaving an office.
“Can you really build a therapeutic relationship through a screen?” – Absolutely. The rapport between therapist and client doesn’t depend on physical proximity. It depends on trust, communication, and understanding. I’ve built deep, effective therapeutic relationships with clients I’ve never met in person, and many of my long-term clients have been with me for years through the screen.
What clients say about online sessions
Many of my clients specifically chose online therapy because of the convenience and comfort it offers. Some have told me they couldn’t have accessed therapy at all without the online option – perhaps because of geographical distance, mobility issues, or caring responsibilities that make it difficult to leave home.
Others have mentioned that being in their own space helped them open up more freely. There’s something about being in a familiar, safe environment that can make it easier to be vulnerable and do the deep work that therapy requires.
A surprising number of clients have said they prefer online sessions to face-to-face therapy they’ve had in the past. The lack of commute, the immediate comfort of being home, and the ability to schedule sessions more flexibly around their lives makes the whole experience less stressful and more sustainable long-term.
Who is online hypnotherapy suitable for?
Online hypnotherapy works well for most people and most issues. I’ve successfully worked online with clients experiencing anxiety, phobias, low confidence, stress, insomnia, unwanted habits, relationship issues, and much more. The format is flexible and adaptable to your specific needs.
You do need to be somewhere private and quiet for sessions, and you need to be able to use the technology well enough to connect to a video call. Beyond that, if you’re motivated to make changes and willing to engage with the process, online hypnotherapy can be highly effective for you.
Taking the first step
If you’re considering online hypnotherapy, the best way to find out if it’s right for you is to get in touch. We can have an initial conversation – also online – where you can ask any questions, tell me what’s been going on for you, and get a sense of whether we’d work well together.
There’s no obligation, no pressure, and nothing to lose by having that first conversation. Many people find that their concerns about online therapy disappear once they’ve experienced how natural and comfortable it actually feels.
Online hypnotherapy has made effective therapy accessible to so many more people. Whether you’re across town or across the country, whether you have a packed schedule or limited mobility, whether you simply prefer the comfort of your own space, online sessions can provide the support and transformation you’re looking for.
